First Day

Friday, August 1, 2014

Our first day in first grade was a huge success!  We ate lunch, played outside and got home safely.  In my years of teaching young children, if this can be accomplished with minimal tears (mostly by the teacher) then you count that day as successful.

The first day is always exciting as we settle into new routines, procedures, and making new friends.  We played a "name" bingo game that everyone seemed to enjoy.  I wish I could clone myself so that I could be among the children while also videoing and capturing these moments.  After reading a book about a little girl with a super long name (Catalina Magdelina Hoopensteiner Walenheimer Hogan Logan Bogan Smith), the children had to walk around the room and ask their classmates to write their name on the child's bingo board.  Once they filled in their board with classmates names, we were able to start the game.  They were absolutely precious asking old friends and new ones to please sign their name on the board.  Everyone participated - which is quite an accomplishment on the first day.  It warmed my heart that they already felt that our room was a safe and encouraging environment.  It takes a lot of nerve to walk up to people you don't know very well and talk to them.  Yay for us!!

We also introduced Toby and Tina to the children.  Everyone had a chance to touch/pet the turtles.  They all seemed to enjoy this.  Again, I was surprised that everyone took a turn.  It was hard to keep them from wandering behind my desk to talk to the turtles when my back was turned :).

The rest of the day was equally rewarding and enjoyable.  In the midst of everything we needed to get done on the first day I completely forgot to take pictures....uuuugggghhhh.  So, I don't have any to post yet.  But, that is on my list of things to do on Monday.  We will just pretend it is the first day.

and honestly.....they probably forgot everything I told them anyways.  Monday is a new day.

Can't wait to see their precious faces again soon.
With all my love,
Mrs. Montgomery

p.s.
our class blog is for your enjoyment and my way to reflect on the blessings of these days we spend together.  If you have a complaint or gripe (which we all do from time to time), please don't rob someone else of their joy by posting it.  Email me at smontgomery@floydboe.net  so we can set up a time to talk about your concerns.  Thank you
